Fickle February Flowers, Floods, Delight and Deluge - all within 24 hours

It's rare for me to put together another video so quickly. However, the last 24 hours have been a roller-coaster. Firstly, some proper warm sunshine and light winds appeared, at last, yesterday morning. With temperatures reaching over 50 degrees F, all our honey bee colonies reacted very quickly to this rare opportunity. I'd worried that at least 2 had failed, yet they clearly were simply waiting for just such a moment. From very early on, before the Crocus began to open, they were sending out their scouts. By 11.00am the garden was buzzing with activity, and I was a very happy chap, wandering around, looking , listening and yes, doing a bit of photography. The wind gradually picked up, but given the sunshine and warmth, this presented no problem to the bees. It was encouraging to see that all the colonies were taking in pollen - a probable sign that the queen is alive and well and beginning to ramp up egg-laying after her winter break. How honey bees can respond so quickly to this sort of change in the weather and the available nectar and pollen sources, is just one amazing aspect of their ecology, which I've just enjoyed reading about in Professor Thomas Seeley's latest book: Piping Hot Bees and Boisterous Buzz-Runners Well worth reading, even if you're not a beekeeper. You will marvel both at how complex their ecology is, and how dedicated researchers like Seeley came to work out why and how they behave in the way that they do. Such a day with flowers opening throughout the garden, and even Crocus in the upper meadow does make one think that winter is nearly behind us. The birds were singing, and as the wind dropped late in the day, all seemed well with the world. But this is fickle February in upland Wales. Overnight, a depression moved in from the Atlantic, and today has seen strong winds, and lashing rain all day. Already we've had well over 50 mm of rain in about 12 hours, with more to come overnight. We've rarely seen such sustained flooding in our lower meadow as the stream has burst its bank. So a dramatic and generally delightful 24 hours which we'll probably remember until the next big weather event hits us. The accompanying music is Schubert's Impromptu no. 2 in E flat major, D. 899, played here by Chiara Bertoglio. Thanks to Musopen.
