Looking to the future: Community celebrates Kalamazoo's incoming multi-million downtown event center

Hundreds gathered in downtown Kalamazoo Friday to celebrate construction progress made on the new event center, which is expected to open in Fall 2027. Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson told News Channel 3 there have been times over the past several years where he was concerned the new venue wouldn't become a reality. "It's almost an emotional moment for me," Anderson said. "Downtown is an economic generator for us and that's fantastic. We need that, but more so, we need a safe place where people want to come and celebrate life moments, see great art and be part of entertainment and sports." According to Anderson, investment in the city is vital as Kalamazoo has recently lost some of its beloved restaurants. "In order to support restaurants, people have to come downtown," Anderson said.
