Scorpion We're pitting the Colibri Quasar cutter against the Quality Importers Scorpion cutter. We picked these two because they both feature reservoirs. A lot of cutters do a single stick well, but we figure a desktop cutter should have this added benefit. [01:22] 1. Pros & Cons: Colibri Quasar Desktop Cutter The stylishly modern, geometric Quasar cutter has the best straight cut out of the 15-20 cutters Paul owns. The v-cut is acceptable but less impressive. Pros: • Solid construction • Looks awesome • Comes in many colours • Rubber feet really hold the cutter in place • Perfect straight cuts Cons: • Doesn't hold many cuts (10-15) • Difficult to open the bottom port to empty the reservoir We also appreciate the potential for matching this cutter with other Colibri Quasar cigar products. [02:44] 2. Pros & Cons: Quality Importers Scorpion In contrast to the Quasar cutter, the Scorpion's design is very nostalgic and old-school. It calls to mind a till, for example, or something on a mobster's desk in the 1940s. It offers two gauges, each with both straight and v-cuts, for a total of four cutters. The v-cuts were good, with one caveat: they're shallow, requiring you to use a larger gauge for your vitola. We needed to use the larger gauge hole for Robustos. Pros: • Old-school look • Four cutters add versatility • Large reservoir holds many cuts • Good v-cuts Cons: • Slightly curved straight cut, though mostly a cosmetic issue • V-cuts generally too shallow, may not work for large gauges • Rubber foot doesn't stop it from slipping • Slightly clunky/awkward action to the lever [04:36] 3. Which Cutter Is Right For Me? The Colibri Quasar desktop cutter is good if you have a smaller desk, and need a cutter for personal consumption. Meanwhile, the Scorpion is great for a cigar shop. In fact, if you live in the USA, you've probably seen a dozen of these in different cigar shops already! It holds around 100 cuts, so you won't have to empty it nearly as often. In terms of price, the Quasar is $125, while the Scorpion is around $60 USD. Note that there's also a Scorpion with only one gauge with a straight and v-cut, and that's around $40-45.
