BEYOND MODERNITY: From Erwin de Vries to Contemporary Alakondre

This exhibition was organized on the occasion of the publication of the biography Erwin de Vries – Eroticism & Lust for Life (translated from Dutch), written by cultural historian and independent researcher Hanneke Oosterhof. The presentation of this biography took place on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at Readytex Art Gallery. For the exhibition, curators Miguel Keerveld and Dhiradj Ramsamoedj worked from the theme Ode to Erwin de Vries, establishing a connection with the concept through which Readytex Art Gallery had participated in the Atlantic World Art Fair (AWAF) in 2022. From the theme magic in visual conversation, artists were challenged with the concept of ‘An Other’. Artists who had participated in AWAF 2022 were asked to create ‘a love letter’ to ‘An Other’, their alter ego, and/or Erwin de Vries. In an effort to move beyond modernity, the curators sought dialogue with the more-than-human. The artists were completely free to give form to this in their own way. This was aimed at engaging with the symbolic interaction that art can offer us. Guest artist Els Tjong Joe Wai was invited to enter into dialogue with Rinaldo Klas. In their work, the curators saw an affinity with modern art and a working method that resonated with that of Erwin de Vries. Dhiradj Ramsamoedj and Miguel Keerveld jointly took on the challenge of co-curating this exhibition. Their nearly opposing worldviews and differing relationships with Erwin de Vries made the exhibition layered and open, allowing visitors to take away whatever was meaningful to them from their own perspective. Participating artists were Sri Irodikromo, Shaundell Horton, Rinaldo Klas, Kurt Nahar, Alida Neslo, Sunil Puljhun, Kit-Ling Tjon Pian Gi, Dhiradj Ramsamoedj, Miguel Keerveld and guest artist Els Tjong Joe Wai.
