The key role of local charge in facilitating the electrosorption (and coadsorption) of electrical double layer components as a function of potential and pH at monometallic and bimetallic surfaces will also be described. Electrosorption features observed using single crystal electrodes are re-examined in the light of such analyses. In particular, for platinum, the veracity of ascribing so-called hydrogen underpotential (“Hupd”) and “Pt-OH” states to chemisorbed H and OH respectively. Hence, some implications for electrocatalytic reactions involving adsorbed OH species will also be addressed briefly.
