Japan predicts mega-earthquake with giant waves and thousands of victims

A report released by the Japanese government on Monday (31) states that the country could be hit by a magnitude 9 mega-earthquake on the Pacific coast. The tremor could generate devastating tsunamis, destroy thousands of buildings and cause the death of around 300,000 people, mainly due to flooding and landslides. According to the document, the epicenter would be in the Nankai Trough seismic zone, a 900 km underwater fault where the Philippine Sea Plate collides with the Eurasian Plate. This region has already caused mega-earthquakes in the past, usually every 100 to 150 years. The accumulation of tectonic stresses over this period makes a new event of great magnitude likely in the coming decades.
