This is the performance of The Dark Sea crankie with musical accompaniment by Tyler Ramsey playing his song "Flare (for Neal Casal)." This crankie was inspired by and made specifically to be played with this song. The scroll is 22 feet long, entirely printed from hand carved linoleum blocks, housed in a custom hand made box. Performed by Jessica White and Tyler Ramsey for a crankie show at the John C. Campbell Folk School on Jan. 22, 2025. A real event inspired the song. While out on the beach one evening, Tyler saw a flare shoot up from out in the ocean. He felt concern for the person in the boat in such distress that they had to send up a flare asking for help. He responded to this moment through music. My imagery for the crankie starts with literal interpretations of the song's lyrics, but then transitions into metaphors of personal, emotional darkness and the darkness of the deep ocean. Like the song, it moves at a slow pace, inviting the viewer to travel along with the song’s narrator, from witnessing a moment while on the beach to becoming the main character out on the open ocean, alone in the sinking boat.
