ALISTAIR McDONALD a banjo playing singer unknown to me until recently is a contributor. This Album is a good representation of the 1960s Folk Music of the time throughout SCOTLAND; THE SCOTIA BAR GLASGOW and many SCOTTISH FOLK CLUBS. It’s fair to speculate as an old SCOTIA BAR Patron I had the privilege at “The WOODEN CASK FOLK CLUB” in CAMBUSLANG to host; listen and play with well-known SCOTIA BAR FOLK acts including: Big MICK (Broderick)and the GAELS; DANNY KYLE; The HUMBLEBUMS with BILLY CONNOLLY and TAM HARVEY and later GERRY RAFFERTY; ALEX HUTTON; ARTHUR JOHNSTONE and The LAGGAN along with others recruited by BILL MARTIN and his Scotia Bar friends from "Eastkilbride". Front Cover: Shows ALEX CAMPBELL splayed in front of The Scotia Bar and a group of patrons. Notable GERRY RAFFERTY's arm around Freddie the Poet next to Scotia manager JOHN ROWAN. Back Cover: Photo shows DANNY KYLE, IAN CAMPBELL, MICK BRODERICK and JIM MCLEAN. There's no track credits just a mention of well-known Scotia musicians who are NOT on the Album. I stuck a stickie note between DANNY KYLE and IAN CAMPBELLS' heads on a copy of the back Cover pointing to a partially visible “WOODEN CASK FOLK CLUB” on the wall [see Note1 below] this partial view of the wall poster is the only evidence “The WOODEN CASK FOLK CLUB” in Cambuslang with the CRIMMOND FOLK GROUP ever existed. [Note1] WOODEN CASK FOLK CLUB The Wooden Cask Restaurant was in SILVERBANKS bordering CAMBUSLANG and RUTHERGLEN. Dedicated to my Sisters Ruby and Margaret who regularly came to support and cheer us on. My sister Ruby got BILL MARTIN and I a weekly gig at the Wooden Cask Restaurant that led on to us forming The Crimmond Folk Group to host and perform at The WOODEN CASK Folk Club. Mid 60s my good friend JIM WILSON'S strong vocals supported me as we performed Folk music at every opportunity. Jim's support also helped Bill Martin and I get a weekly music session at the Wooden Cask Restaurant Lounge bar that led on to an additional FOLK CLUB NIGHT. BILL MARTIN my early music mentor and fellow student at COATBRIDGE COLLEGE and I formed the “CRIMMOND FOLK GROUP” to play The Wooden Cask then Jim suggested we add singer guitarist BRIAN McGINLEY for a fuller sound and later Bill suggested guitarist JIM McGINLEY. We were a typical pub style Folk Group of the time in GLASGOW area but the "WOODEN CASK FOLK CLUB" gave us an opportunity to play with and host The SCOTIA BAR regulars and others by way of BILL MARTINS musician friends from EAST KILBRIDE and THE SCOTIA Bar in GLASGOW. This opened a door for us to exchange gigs with FOLK CLUBS such as; STRATHAVEN FOLK CLUB and The BURNSIDE HOTEL FOLK CLUB. playing for The LIVINGSTONES FOLK GROUP occasionally opening for their main acts including HAMISH IMLACH; The HUMBLEBUMS with BILLY CONOLLY and GERRY RAFFERTY who later asked us to open their Concert at the BRUCE HOTEL EAST KILBRIDE in the late 1960s. Of Interest: MATT McGINN was an occasional walk-on at the Cask and I seem to remember FRASER BRUCE; There was also a very young Folk Group from the Cambuslang Rutherglen area that asked to play a few times during our interval who I now believe with a Double Base in their Folk instrument lineup from Cambuslang could only have been the future JSD BAND. I took artistic license inserting my wee story into the Album notes; Cheers LAWRENCE BURNS SCOTIA BAR; Glasgow; website: https://www.belhaven.co.uk/pubs/glasg... https://www.instagram.com/scotiabargl...
