Yes, there is scuba diving in Iceland! And true to its name, the water is ice cold! This arctic dive lets you explore the rift between two tectonic plates. The mid-atlantic ridge is the site where the European tectonic plate pulls away from it's American counterpart. This is where two continents are ripping apart from one another, causing the whole seafloor to spread. This amazing geographic feature is runs most of the Atlantic Ocean and was instrumental in the discovery of plate tectonics in the late-1960s. It's an amazing place, but most of it is buried deep under miles of sea. But there's one big exception -- Iceland! The mid-Atlantic rift is tearing apart this small Arctic nation that is, quite literally, half America and half Europe. These rifts created Silfra Fissure, a part of the Thingvellir national part in Iceland. Silfra is a beautiful glacier-fed spring that has become one of the most famous and unusual dive sites in the world. Come dive with me and explore Silfra on this episode of Submerged Stories.
