ISO 22301:2019 Controls for Business Continuity Management Systems

ISO 22301:2019 is the international standard for the Security and Resilience of Business Continuity Management Systems. It is designed to help organizations with protection, preparation, response, and recovery related to critical business disruptions that may arise. The standard is comprised of 10 clausal areas that specify the structure and requirements for implementing and maintaining a business continuity management system. Clausal areas one through three specify the requirement for the scope of the system, establish normative vocabulary, and define important terms used in the standard. Clausal areas 4-10 outline the specific actions as they relate to a business continuity management system. Clausal area 4 introduces the requirements necessary to understand the organization, establish the context of the business continuity management system applicable to the organization, and determine the needs, requirements and scope of the system. Clausal area 5 summarizes the requirements specific to top management’s role in the business continuity management system, how leadership articulates its expectations to the organization, and outlines roles, responsibilities, and authorities. Clausal area 6 describes the requirements for establishing strategic objectives and guiding principles for the business continuity management system as a whole. This includes actions to address risk and opportunity, business continuity objectives and how to achieve them, and how to make changes to the system. Clausal area 7 establishes competence and communication on a recurring or as-needed basis with interested parties, while documenting, controlling, maintaining and retaining required information. Clausal area 8 defines business continuity needs, determines how to address them and develops procedures to manage the organization during a disruption. This includes operational planning, business impact analysis, risk assessment, business continuity plans and procedures, evaluation of documentation and more. Clausal area 9 summarizes the requirements for monitoring, measuring, analyzing and evaluating business continuity performance. Finally, clausal area 10 identifies and acts on nonconformity to ISO 22301 and continual improvement through corrective actions.
