In Hmong belief, long ago, some tigers were said to possess evil spirits, allowing them to transform into any kind of monster or human. When hunters entered the forest, these malevolent tigers could disguise themselves as hunters and kill everyone. This legend of Txiv Laus Luam took place long ago. In a small village, there lived a young Hmong man named Luam. His wife’s younger sister, Ntxawm, affectionately called him Txiv Laus Luam. Luam and his wife were a newly married couple, starting their life together deep in the jungle, far from their families and the villagers. One day, Luam set out to hunt. As he wandered into the woods, he spotted some monkeys in a tree. Unbeknownst to him, a tiger had been following him, hiding nearby and watching intently. After Luam shot a monkey, he quickly approached to retrieve it. In that moment, the tiger silently pounced and killed him. That night, the tiger consumed Luam. The next morning, it transformed into his likeness, donning Luam’s clothes, carrying his gun, and slinging a dead monkey over its back. The tiger then walked home, intending to finish the job by killing Luam’s wife.
