Nearly four decades after the brutal killings of four anti-apartheid activists, the hope for truth and accountability is finally in reach for the families of the Cradock Four after an inquest into their deaths was finally opened in the Gqeberha High Court earlier this year. The inquest is examining the events surrounding the 1985 murders of Matthew Goniwe, Fort Calata, Sparrow Mkhonto, and Sicelo Mhlauli, known as the Cradock Four, allegedly at the hands of the apartheid security police. The inquest has had two sittings, in March and October, and saw testimonies from both family members and perpetrators. The inquest, presided over by Judge Thami Beshe, will resume in March 2026.
