When Israeli and American strikes hit Iran, the world reached for its phones and quickly discovered that the Iran war was not going to be like Gaza, or The Ukraine. Information poured out of those conflicts - TikTok videos, Telegram channels, live-streamed destruction - but barely a trickle flowed from Tehran. As the missiles fell, Iran cut the internet, and what followed has been a conflict between nuclear axis powers in near-total silence. AFP is literally on the frontline. It’s one of a handful of news orgs to have reporters in Tehran. They’ve had to report WWI-style with boots on the ground - while AFP’s teams have backed them with cutting edge AI from thousands of miles away. Co-ordinating it is Phil Chetwynd, AFP’s global news director, from Paris, using OSINT and old school journalism to extract facts from the silence.
