How to go from layout to profile in just a few clicks. If you've ever laid out a storm or sanitary system in plan view, whether from scratch or from field-collected survey and then had to circle back later to profile it, you’re not alone. Many Civil 3D users start with a pipe network layout and deal with the profiles later. The good news? Civil 3D has a tool designed exactly for this moment: Create Alignment from Network Parts. Here’s how it works. Start with a Pipe Network Let’s say you’ve already placed your structures and pipes, but you haven’t profiled anything yet. No alignments. No profile views. Just a pipe network. This is where the tool shines. Use “Create Alignment from Network Parts” 1. Go to the Home tab in the Civil 3D ribbon. 2. Look under the Create Design panel for the Alignment drop-down. 3. Select Create Alignment from Network Parts. Now select your structures in order from downstream to upstream. Civil 3D will highlight the path it's creating based on the parts you select. Once done, hit Enter. You’ll be prompted to name your alignment and assign it to a site. Important: Before clicking OK, make sure to check the box labeled “Create profile and profile view.” Configure the Profile Next, you’ll see the Create Profile from Surface dialog. • Select the surfaces you want to include (e.g., EG and FG). • Adjust styles as needed, especially for your proposed surface. • Click Draw in profile view, then continue. From here, you’re taken to the Create Profile View dialog, where you can configure station ranges, band sets, hatching, and other display settings. Civil 3D will auto-select the pipe network parts related to your alignment. Once ready, click Create Profile View and place it in your drawing. Just Like That, You’ve Got a Profile Civil 3D generates a full profile view with surface lines and the actual pipe network parts already drawn.
