On Wednesday the 28th of June 2023 at around 4PM, there was an incident at Whitfords Station with someone being pushed or jumping on the tracks; the details are unclear. This resulted in the line being closed between the two closest stations which have a crossover, Joondalup and Stirling, allowing emergency services to respond. This was absolutely chaotic as it was an unplanned closure of one of the busiest train lines in peak hour! Replacement bus services did not start operating until almost an hour after the disruption initially started. There were all sorts of buses out including older Karrinyup B7s, NHs, CATs, and articulated buses. Train-replacement services ran with two patterns: all stops, and express Stirling - Joondalup and back. Only a mere few minutes prior to this incident, a southbound train suffered an operational issue and lost internal power. This meant that it terminated at Leederville train station before entering the siding to return to the depot, which it then couldn't do because straight after that. I was there on site soon after the disruption was announced at Joondalup Station, filming the chaos of the terminating trains and crowds at the train-replacement bus stop. I then take the full 904 journey that was operating, all stops to Stirling Station, where I take a look at the terminating trains and buses there, before returning back to Joondalup by train, which was the first one during the disruption to stop at Whitfords Station, since the previous Butler-bound trains were skipping it. Trains in both directions finally resumed operation with delays at around 7PM. The delays ended at 10PM. All these delays, confusion and overcrowding just goes to show how vital our train network is, and how bad it is when one event causes disruption to it. DISCLAIMER: This video is my no means intended to be disrespecting people involved in the incident at Whitfords. Details of it were unclear at the time and still are, as the media does minimal reporting on these things. Instead, this is simply covering the crazy scene that is a Joondalup Line closure in peak hour, which hasn't been seen for years. If I refer to anything being 'cool' or 'exciting' in the video, I am purley referring to the bus and train service patterns seen, nothing else. I commiserate with the victim and their family for this tragic event that occured.
