“The Best Is Yet To Come” Composer: Cy Coleman (1959) Lyricist: Carolyn Leigh (1959) Arranged by: Scott Ragsdale (2012) Performed by the Columbia Big Band [now Patuxent Jazz Band (PJB)] Director: Matt Pisarcik Columbia Bands, Inc. Performed: May 15, 2022 River Hill High School, Clarksville, MD Concert Playlist: • CBB: May 15, 2022 - River Hill High School The COVID-19 pandemic substantially disrupted the Columbia Big Band. The group had to cancel a planned concert for March 14, 2020, as the world shut down the day after the dress rehearsal for the gig. A few remote-recording projects followed, but the band only managed to come together irregularly for the first time in an outdoor space in June 2021. The following months saw membership changes, rehearsal-location changes, and another cancelled concert in the January 2022 Delta surge. After nearly three years, the band finally returns to the stage at River Hill High School to perform a setlist of standards, old favorites of the band, and some very new repertoire for an enthusiastic crowd. Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh’s “The Best Is Yet To Come” was written for Tony Bennet; in the popular consciousness, the song is deeply associated with Frank Sinatra. Starting with his 1964 recording with the Count Basie Orchestra, Sinatra’s version took the world by storm, going so far as lunar orbit as the wake-up call for the crew of Apollo 10 on May 22, 1969. Sinatra chose to end his career with this hopeful tune, as the last song he sang in public in 1995. Wind Machine - Sammy Nestico (1976) Togo - Dan White (2019) / Arr.
