Starting September 25, Florida's new open carry law goes into effect, allowing anyone legally permitted to own a firearm to openly carry it in public. While Florida joins 38 other states with similar laws, officials stress that limitations still apply. Open carry is prohibited in courthouses, government buildings, polling places, and private businesses that choose to restrict firearms. Hillsborough County Sheriff Grady Judd reminds gun owners that refusing to leave a property after being asked to disarm could result in felony armed trespassing charges. Experts urge Floridians to educate themselves thoroughly, as mistakes can have serious legal consequences. Gun rights advocates expect more businesses to put up “no firearms” signs, and open carry charges are already being dropped in Hillsborough County. Melissa Marino reports from the WFLA newsroom.
