Copyright Eighth Note Publications (2023) King Arthur's Ride (2022) is inspired by the Arthurian legends found in old English folklore. The piece begins with the heraldry and fanfare of the court at Camelot and the Knights of the Round Table. Soon, however, the sounds of the court fade off into the distance, drowned out by the thundering hooves of galloping horses, as the heroic knights ride off on a quest. The mighty crash of battle punctuates the heroic theme representing the great warriors. Yet the heart of the piece - the goal of the quest - is not bombastic but serene. Perhaps this is the story of the sword in the stone, depicting Arthur's journey from lowly squire to fabled king. Or maybe it's the love story of King Arthur and Queen Guinevere. Or it could be a story that has yet to be told! I leave it up to the imagination of everyone who comes along for the ride. When a mentor of mine suggested that I write and submit a piece of high school band music for the Howard Cable Memorial Prize in Composition, I was enthusiastic but unsure of where to begin. After several unsuccessful starts, I settled on the idea of writing the kind of music I enjoyed playing when I was in high school. Music that was fun to play and had memorable melodies and themes, while simultaneously was musically substantive and challenging. But above all, I wanted to write a piece of music that told a story and stimulated the imagination. And so, King Arthur's Ride was born.
