In this episode, Dr. James F. McGrath, Dr. Baruch Halpern and Dr. Daniel O. McClellan team up to debunk some silly pseudo-historical claims about the Old and New Testaments. Having graduated Harvard (A.B., M.A., Ph.D) under the tutelage of Frank Moore Cross, George Ernest Wright, Thomas O. Lambdin and Thorkild Jacobsen, Baruch Halpern spent 16 years at York University in Toronto, moving to Penn State in 1992. His publications include 4 books, the most recent of which was David's Secret Demons, and a number of edited volumes and articles. While considered a historian, he insists on the import of language, archaeology and ethnology for the understanding not just of ancient texts, such as the Bible, but also of ancient living patterns and technologies. James Frank McGrath is the Clarence L. Goodwin Chair in New Testament Language and Literature at Butler University and is known for his work on Early Christianity, Mandaeism, criticism of the Christ myth theory, and the analysis of religion in science fiction. He received his Ph.D. from Durham University in 1998. Daniel received his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in ancient Near Eastern studies, where he focused on Biblical Hebrew and minored in Classical Greek. He completed a master of studies in Jewish studies at the University of Oxford in July of 2010 and a master of arts in biblical studies in 2013 at Trinity Western University just outside of Vancouver, British Columbia. In early 2020, he defended his doctoral dissertation written for the University of Exeter on the cognitive science of religion and the conceptualization of deity and divine agency in the Hebrew Bible. In 2018, he was the Democratic candidate for the Utah State House of Representatives in House District 52. He also was once the Democratic candidate for the Utah State Senate in Senate District 10 for the 2020 election. He currently works as a scripture translation supervisor for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salt Lake City, and he adjunct teaches in the Ancient Scripture Department at Brigham Young University.
