What is A Posterior Tongue Tie?

What's a posterior tongue-tie? Well, we've been hearing a lot about tongue-ties lately but did you know that there are two types? Anterior tongue-ties are obvious - we can see right away that the underside of the tongue is connected too tightly to the floor of the mouth. This is the kind of tongue-tie that's most easily diagnosed and treated. Posterior tongue-ties are quite different because they don't look obvious at first glance. The back part of the tongue is restricted rather than the front portion of the tongue. A baby with a posterior tongue-tie may have difficulty breast feeding, but the problems are not limited to that. Adults with posterior tongue-ties will often experience clenching, grinding, TMJ problems like pain and tension, and sleep apnea or other sleep disordered breathing conditions. These tongue-ties can be difficult to diagnose, and not every doctor who releases tongue-ties knows about them, or how to release them properly, so it pays to do your homework here.
