Sugarcane is a 2024 documentary film, directed by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie and produced by Emily Kassie and Kellen Quinn. Lily Gladstone joined the project as an executive producer. It follows an investigation into the Canadian Indian residential school system, igniting a reckoning in the lives of survivors and descendants. Accumulating immense emotional power as it methodically uncovers a grave injustice, Sugarcane is one of the most compelling documentaries of the year. This is what generational trauma looks like. Horrific accounts of the trickle-down of damage, from grandparents to parents to children. Courageous work by co-director Julian Brave NoiseCat and his father, Ed Archie NoiseCat, whose painful journey together in search of healing is the film’s spine. Other narratives include Chief Rick Gilbert, who travels to the Vatican seeking redress for the church’s actions, investigator Charlene Belleau, who painstakingly pieces together exactly what happened at the school, and Chief Willie Sellars, who has organized and led the inquiry into the school’s history. Many people found it difficult to even talk what they went through; these people are in their 70s and above. Indigenous peoples are still dying from residential schools.
