Raphael / Raffaello Sanzio: Holy Family with a Palm Tree

This painting depicts Jesus Christ, his mother Mary, and her husband Joseph, as they rest on the Flight into Egypt. This devotional work was painted by Raphael (born Raffaello Sanzio) in Florence between 1506 and 1507. The focus this image is the relationship between Christ and Joseph. In Christian art, Joseph is often envisioned as an older man initially perplexed by Christ’s miraculous birth. But, in the moment we see here, Joseph grows in understanding and faith.
