Support the project - https://northmen.com/forge Buy us a coffee and win an axe - https://northmen.com/raffle Thanks to you the forge stands strong but we still need essential equipment to have a fully functional workshop capable of becoming a true symbol of blacksmithing in Northern Europe. With your help the workshop can become a place of heritage where traditional craftsmanship is preserved and passed on to future generations through apprenticeships and blacksmithing courses. Equipment to be funded: • Jewelry tools • Rolling mill • Engraving setups • Soldering setups • Casting equipment • Heat treatment setup To host a blacksmithing course for 5 people, we need five fully equipped workspaces, each with: • Anvil • Blacksmith’s vice • Forge • Hammers • Tongs • Hardy tools The gates were designed by our master craftsman Sören Uhlmann. They are 3m wide and 4.25m high (9.84 x 13.94 ft). Built using traditional timber framing, they feature 14x14 cm (5 ½”) pine beams joined with oak pegs. The frame is infilled with 10 cm of wood-fiber insulation and clad with wooden boards. The front of the gates was charred using the Shou Sugi Ban technique and treated with pine tar. Our guild’s carpenters Tom Schotman and Oskars Elferts built the gates in three weeks. The architectural blacksmithing was finished in two months by Sören Uhlmann, Tomáš Nosek, Ewan Spooner and Luca Colace. The hand-forged steel components weigh approximately 400 kg (880 lbs). The total weight of the gates is around 1 tonne (2200lbs).
