I'm aware that lots of people love Harley Bentons (including me) but this video demonstrates that not much as changed quality-wise in the two years between my buying a LP Gold Top copy and this one. Is it playable out of the box? Yes if you don't know any better about decent actions & playability. It plugs in, it makes a noise and it looks great. But closer inspection revealed that the action was very high at both ends - and for a reason. As soon as I made the slightest action adjustment down from the 3+ mm at the last fret, all the notes choked off. This indicated a) very uneven frets underneath and b) a degree of cynicism in the HB quality control process. Make no mistake; the guitar doesn't just happen to have an action set just high enough to mask the buzzing and choking of uneven frets. Someone chooses that in order to sell it. In addition, this guitar had a 1st fret that wasn't even seated properly - meaning that I was unable to do any set up work until I'd corrected that. Luckily, a lot of force from my fret press plus some superglue seemed to take care of that but it's another serious fault that would scupper the inexperienced player. In case you think I'm being perfectionist, watch out for me trying to bend notes on the set up the guitar came with. You literally couldn't bend a single note without the guitar choking. That to me is unplayable. You'll see from this video how much fret levelling this guitar required and how much nut adjustment it took to make it play well. It's almost exactly as much work as my first solid-body, single-cut HB LP copy took 2 years ago to make that play well. It's not a £175 top of the range HB guitar; it's a £275 HB guitar when you add in the work I had to do to it to make it playable in the reasonable sense of the word.
