All things being equal, a weak grip makes the club face more open, a strong grip makes the face more closed, and a neutral grip is somewhere in-between. With that said, the strength of our grip is not the only thing that opens or closes our club face. It is the combination of our grip strength, face angle at address, shaft lean at address, how much we bow or cup or wrists, how our arms rotate, and how much we lean the shaft forward at impact or “add loft” at impact. Having said that, there is a much easier way to understand how to square up our club face. As Tiger Woods said, the back of our lead wrist controls the club face. If you can recognize the direction our lead wrist is pointed at address, and keep it pointed in the same direction by the time we return to impact, we will be able to square up our club face . . . . .
