Okay so here is a quick test / direct comparison of DJI Mic 2 and new DJI Mic 3 (timestamps in the description) Recorded with Osmo Action 4, mic connected wirelessly to the camera The bike: Honda CB750 Hornet with Akrapovic slip on Mic placement: just behind the tail light, on the license plate holder (all clips are recorded with exactly the same mic placement) For all clips these settings are the same: Transmitter gain = -12 dB (lowest it can go) Noise reduction = off Low cut = off What changes between clips: Clip 1 (DJI Mic 3) = clipping control = off Clip 2 (DJI Mic 3) = clipping control = on Clip 3 (DJI Mic 2) = clipping control = not available in Mic 2 First 3 clips are all audio straight from the video file (no post editing at all - just a video file uploaded from the camera) The the same 3 clips are repeated but this time audio comes from the Mics’ internal 32-bit float recordings To be honest I am a little surprised by the results….and a little disappointed: 1. Mic 3 audio baked into the video file is bordering unusable when not paired with clipping control - it just clips like crazy, which is surprising because the Mic 3 has max 126 dB claimed SPL (Mic 2 has 120 dB SPL) so it should be a lot better than Mic 2… 2. When you enable clipping control on Mic 3 it gets better but the waveform still is almost totally overwhelmed, just the volume is lower. So no additional audio signal information. Plus it is very susceptible to wind noise - you get a lot of loud „white noise” static / cracking - very noticable and it’s quite distracting 3. The 32-bit recording from Mic 3 is much better but the „white noise” is still present and distracting. Plus the waveform still looks „maxed out” 4. The Mic 2 in comparison sounds a little less clear and more „muddy” but the audio baked into the video file is very similar to the internal recording plus it’s not peaking as hard as Mic 3. And I think it might actually be more pleasant listening experience - at least for motovlog POV videos ;) So all in all I think - at least for the moment - I might actually prefer the Mic 2…unless DJI fixes Mic 3 with firmware updates.
