Southern Bread Pudding For the Bread Pudding: 6 cups of day-old bread, cubed (French bread, brioche, or croissan loaf work best) 2 cups whole milk 1 cup heavy cream 4 large eggs 1 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for greasing the dish) Bourbon Sauce 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1 cup granulated sugar 1 large egg 1/4 cup bourbon (or more to taste) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Whipped cream Vanilla ice cream Paper plates Preheat your oven to 350°F Lightly grease an 8x11-inch baking dish with the melted butter. If your bread isn’t already day-old or slightly stale, you can cube it and toast it in the oven at 300°F for 10 minutes to dry it out. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, granulated sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined. Place the cubed bread into the greased baking dish. If using raisins, sprinkle them evenly over the bread. Pour the mixture over the bread, pressing down lightly to ensure the bread absorbs the liquid. Let the mixture sit for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the bread to soak up the pudding mixture. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 50 minutes to an hour or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set (a knife inserted in the center should come out clean). Remove from the oven and let cool 10-15 minutes. Bourbon Sauce In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over low to medium heat. In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar and egg. Gradually add this mixture to the melted butter, stirring constantly. Cook over low heat, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the bourbon and vanilla extract. Serve the bread pudding warm, drizzled with the bourbon sauce, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and chopped nuts!
