Outlook: The Line.

From the Film Australia Collection. Made by The Commonwealth Film Unit 1970. Directed by Chris McGill. This film commemorates the establishment of the standard gauge railway line from Sydney to Perth, first opened for goods traffic in January 1970. It does not attempt to trace this trip; rather, it captures the spirit of the crossing, the flashes of raw colour as the bleak but beautiful Australian landscape rips past, the clang of hammer on spike, the roar of a train and the scream of a horn echoing across the seemingly endless unbroken space.
