This talk examined Rujeko Hockley's and Hank Willis Thomas’ careers as conduits for confronting inequality, and For Freedoms, an artist collective founded by Hank Willis Thomas committed to using creative expression to shift socio-political landscapes and was presented by Chapel Hill Denham. Born in Zimbabwe and based in New York City, Rujeko Hockley is an Assistant Curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art where she recently co-curated the 2019 Whitney Biennial. Previously, she was an Assistant Curator at the Brooklyn Art Museum. While there, she curated numerous solo exhibitions, including one featuring Kehinde Wiley, and co-curated the acclaimed exhibition We Wanted a Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965–85. Hank Willis Thomas, her husband, is a New York-based visual artist whose work has been exhibited internationally at venues including the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain; California African American Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, OH; and the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD, among others. His collaborative projects include Question Bridge: Black Males, In Search Of The Truth (The Truth Booth), and The Writing on the Wall, and his works are held in numerous collections. The talk was moderated by Tayo Ogunbiyi, Head of Curatorial at ART X Collective.
