In this Flora Friday video, instructor Mike Anderson teaches us about the Purple-pod Cluster-leaf also commonly know as Lowveld Cluster-leaf, scientific name Terminalia prunioides, in Afrikaans this tress is called Sterkbos, is a striking tree in the landscape during mid-summer. The eye-catching purple pods are present for most of the summer, autumn and winter, and are the main aid to identification. During spring and summer, the flowers of this tree have a pungent smell as mike suggests, almost like smelly socks! The Purple-pod Cluster-leaf is widespread throughout the Lowveld region and occurs as far north as Ethiopia and Kenya as well as westwards into Namibia and Angola. As the Afrikaans name, Sterkbos suggests, the wood is very hardy, used for building material in traditional huts. Agriculturally the wood is used for making handles and implements. It is used for fence posts and is borer-resistant. Although the wood pieces are small, it makes excellent firewood and can be used to make good quality charcoal.
