Two strong forces in bluegrass music merged into a single system for a short period in 1990 and begin to spin into the perfect storm for traditional bluegrass music fans. These iconic families of the genre got together to create what would an award winning classic. Families of Tradition would be the finished product of a historic recording session which would be among the earliest at the new Doobie Shea Studios and be released on the the also newly formed BGC Records. Don & David Parmley of the Bluegrass Cardinals along with Del, Ronnie & Rob McCoury of what would known shortly after as the Del McCoury Band, gave the bluegrass fans a rare gem in this album. Families of Tradition would win the IBMA Award for "Recorded Event of Year" for 1991.
