Gamhar (Gmelina arborea) belongs to the family Verbenaceae, is a fast-growing, medium-sized deciduous tree that grows up to 40 meters in height and has a diameter of up to 140 cm. Its leaves fall in the month of February and the tree remains leafless till the month of April which makes it suitable for planting in agroforestry. It is found in rainforests as well as dry deciduous forests and can tolerate a wide range of altitudes up to 1200 m above sea level and annual rainfall of 750 to 5000 mm. It is native to India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and other parts of Southeast Asia. Its wood is yellow or grayish-white in color, even grained and is very useful for planks, door frames, carriages, furniture and all kinds of carpentry. In the states of eastern India, its wood is also used in religious functions. Its leaves and fruits are used as fodder in many parts of India. It is also used as medicine and good quality honey is also obtained from it.
