Achim Menges - Coalescences of Machine and Material Computation

Lecture date: 2012-11-01 Both machinic processes, which operate in the binary realm of the digital, and material processes, which operate in the domain of the physical, can be considered computational. Although the bias of contemporary design drifts towards the former, the field of architecture has sporadically instigated investigations of the latter. This lecture introduces Achim Menges’ work in the largely unexplored territory of machine and material computation and proves that both can co-exist and intensely engage the design process. The research will accompany a series of prototype buildings constructed at his Institute for Computational Design in Stuttgart. Achim Menges is an architect and professor at Stuttgart University where he is the founding director of the Institute for Computational Design. He has also been a visiting professor in architecture at Harvard University’s GSD. Menges graduated from the AA with honours, subsequently teaching as Studio Master of EmTech from 2002–09 and as Unit Master of Diploma Unit 4 from 2003–06.
