Master source unknown, recorded probably New York, 1943 ca. Philip Reep (tenor), Claude Reese (tenor), Herbie Hendry (baritone), Darrel Woodyard (bass) These Elm City Four (there was another group early in the century) billed themselves as "America's most beloved barbershop quartette", which may actually have been true. They became known nationwide as an important part of "The Gay Nineties Revue", a CBS radio show about old-time songs and lifestyle. So much were the performers into it that they even dressed in period costumes for the broadcasts, as you can see on the photo. The history of the group is somewhat obscure. Darrel Woodyard first recorded with the National Cavaliers in 1927 but left the group in 1931. He, Reep, and Reese were members of the Bobby Tucker Singers for a time, so maybe they met there? The Elm City Four still appeared on radio in the early 1950s. I have no idea where this particular recording came from - I never heard of the label before, and the record shows no master number or other identifying features. The material is horribly noisy and shows lots of bubbles, similar to Joe Davis products from the last years of the war, so maybe there is a connection. Anybody who knows something about the group or the record label is welcome to share the information.
