“Why did the soul come into this world?” This question sounds ancient and profound, yet according to the Ashtavakra Gita, it is built on a fundamental illusion. Ashtavakra shatters the very assumption behind the question. The soul never came into this world. And that which never came cannot have a reason for coming. Religion imagines the soul traveling — entering the body, suffering karma, seeking liberation, and returning to some higher realm. Ashtavakra calls this an invention of the fearful mind. The world does not contain the soul. The soul contains the world. Just as a dream appears within you, but you never enter the dream, the entire universe appears within consciousness. The moment consciousness identifies itself as the body, the illusion of “I am born” arises. The soul is unborn, timeless, and indivisible. Birth belongs to the body. Action belongs to the mind. Karma belongs to identification — not to consciousness. There is no divine authority sending the soul into existence, because the soul is absolutely free. No purpose brought it here. Purpose itself is a mental construct. Liberation is not for the soul — the soul is already free. Liberation is for the ignorance that believed it was bound. When this misunderstanding collapses, the question changes. Not “Why did the soul come?” But “In what does this world appear?” And the answer is silent, immediate, and undeniable — in the very awareness reading these words.
