(13 Oct 2019) LEAD IN Most of us are used to kindergartens looking after children. Well now in Russia the idea's been adopted for caring for the elderly. STORY-LINE: Meet 80-year-old Roza Andreeva. She's one of the beneficiaries of a scheme known as the "kindergarten for the elderly". "To sit on the bench doing nothing? how can you just sit on the bench, while there (kindergarten for elderly) is socializing, you can talk about books, I have many books, you can read. It is the blessing for us elderly to live because nothing burdens us, you have food,  you have a pension. Read and go there (kindergarten to elderly), especially when it is so close." she says. The "kindergarten for the elderly" was opened in 2017 at the Integrated Center for Social Services in the Russian city of Cheboksary. The concept is very much like a kindergarten. Those who attend spend the whole day at the center, involved in various activities. In the evening relatives come to pick them up. The day in the "Kindergarten" begins with a health check-up, then gymnastics or walking in the fresh air. Natalya Semenova, the instructor for Physical exercises, says: "physical condition changes of course, a person who just got up from the couch cannot bend or do exercises. We are adapting them gradually if they can, they will take part in the exercise or can just watch. The physical condition of our grannies have significantly improved, they are not missing exercises and taking part with pleasure." Then it's time to do something you fancy - including sewing classes, chess and pottery. And there's a nod to the 21st century. The people here are also taught to use modern equipment, such as smartphones that make their communication with family members much easier. At the moment, 8 pensioners attend the classes every day. The monthly cost for attendance is 62 USD. According to pensioner Natalya Semenova, this amount is affordable for many families, while a private nurse costs much more. The daily rate for nurses at home starts from 15USD per day. The Kindergarten for the elderly is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Renada Fedorova, director of the Integrated Center for Social Services of the City of Cheboksary, says the idea is catching on. "The main aim is to prolong active years and those years to have a quality of life. And children also to continue their work and be calm about their parents." They're now consulting with other regions in Russia to open the same services elsewhere.
