According to the Lin'an Annals dating from the 13th century, the street was 4,185 meters long, with over 10,000 stone slabs to pave it. It was the central axis of Lin'an City and the only passage the emperor used to visit Jingling Palace to worship his ancestors. At the time, the Imperial Street was lined with tens of thousands of stores, and half of the city's population lived nearby.
