Overview The New-York Historical Society was established in 1804, making it the oldest museum in the city of New York. The museum and library host vast collections of art, objects, artifacts, and documents which illustrate the history of New York and America, conveying the stories of their diverse populations and expanding the understanding of American identity and how it came to be. Taking the latest exhibition “New York Before New York: The Castello Plan of New Amsterdam” as a jumping off point, this conversation explores the current mission of how the first museum in the city and how it has evolved over time. It will examine how the institution continues to remain relevant with its multifaceted groups of collections and specialized exhibition programming.
