Scouting has developed over the many years unique training skills that help young people learn more efficiently and independently. The EDGE (Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, and Enable) method is the official way of training youth to teach skills. Adult leaders need to use the EDGE method correctly setting the example. The EDGE method of teaching skills is not limited. The EDGE method can be used in many situations throughout Scouting. We call it EDGE. When should a Scout learn by using the EDGE method? - When a child starts to show interest in learning a skill. This could happen as early as cub scouts. Pack leaders tend to resist this as the structure is based on adult leadership to the cub scouts. If you explain in simple terms that they can comprehend then the rest of the process can enable the youth to achieve a new skill. Most adult leaders go into great detail when explaining (E) and often take too much time demonstrating (D). The majority of the time should be concentrated on guiding (G) the scout. Enabling (E) a scout with the right materials will help them retain the skill learned. If you teach a scout a knot and they don't walk away with a rope in their hands… then it's most likely you'll have to teach it again soon. You know you did it right when they do the skill over and over on their own. The EDGE method can be also a way of teaching life skills. The EDGE method is not just reserved for scouts. Other leaders and parents can benefit from using the EDGE method. ⚠️ Important: The following is considered "aggressive recruitment" that should only be used if no other recruitment has worked in the past. Very persuasive results if successful. But has been know to backfire. (It's known as the "hail mary pass" of leader recruitment.) Example - Dying unit, leader recruiting meeting: Explain, that you need adult leaders to join the unit. Explain that not all positions are scout-facing, and without their help, the unit is bound to fail. We need your commitment tonight at whatever level you can. Scouting isn't hard if we all jump in and do something. Scouting is impossible without you. Demonstrate, by going over to the light switch and turning it off. In the dark tell them “This is what it's like if we don't get any new leaders… No camping… No Scouting Events… No Scouting Adventures...” And worst of all, when the light comes back on… your kids are looking at you. Guide them by showing My Scouting on a laptop or cell phone. Available online training, on their schedule. Guide them in how to set up their my.scouting.org account. Enable the parents by handing out adult applications and pins. Now that they have set up a My Scouting account they can start their training.
