Thorsten Kodalle will discuss how he leveraged different approaches to combine educational wargaming and an agile education philosophy at the Command and Staff College of the German Armed Forces. His presentation will principally focus on three case studies: 1) gamification of strategic thinking using a commercial off the shelf (COTS) boardgame (Scythe); 2) strategic wargaming using a matrix-style wargame in basic staff officer course; 3) strategic wargaming in a general staff course using RAND’s Hedgemony. He will also discuss challenges and lessons learned for other educators aiming to integrate serious wargaming into the classroom. Bio: Thorsten Kodalle is a lieutenant colonel (general staff) at the Command and Staff College of the German Armed Forces and lectures on security policy with a particular focus on NATO, Critical Infrastructure and Cyber. He is a member of the NATO research task group “Gamification of Cyber Defense/Resilience”, an experienced facilitator of manual wargaming on the operational level for courses of action analysis, for operational analysis, operations research, serious gaming and especially for matrix wargaming. He supported the development of an influence wargame by the Australian Information Warfare Division in 2018 and his most recent project Gamification of Strategic Thinking features the usage of a COTS board game (Scythe) to teach strategic tools like SWOT analysis, OODA-Loop and agile planning tools like the Kanban board. He has a diploma in Social Sciences and is currently writing his master thesis on Gamification of Cyber Defence/Resilience at the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College. Twitter: @kodalle
