0:00 - Titles 0:10 - TV soap opera For a change, YouTube actually let me upload a video without needing the TV overlay! This clip is supposed to transform into an image from an old B&W TV (seen later on). The irony. 0:30 - The TARDIS materialises in space I used the original model shot with a new starfield and took the flashing light from the scene when it lands again later. 0:45 - Atrios on the TARDIS' scanner 0:55 - Marshal shoots the guard The original effect was pretty basic, but still needed masking. The pulsing rings felt like they matched the sound effect quite well along with the shape of the weapon. 1:04 - Missile Strike Stabilised the original missile and added new stars. I also turned the explosion upside-down to make it look less affected by gravity. 1:24 - K9 opens a door Who needs a sonic screwdriver when you have a K9? 1:31 - "K9 lights!" 1:36 - Kidnapped The transmat effect is quite overwhelming so I just enhanced is a bit with a glow surrounding the figures. I've always liked the fact that in Dr Who these were almost always called "transmats", in Blake's 7 they were "teleports", and in Star Trek they were "transporters" 1:48 - He's with us K9 carefully unlocks a door with his blaster. 1:57 - A trap for K9 In the novelisation K9 simply follows some noises and then gets trapped, and there's no mention of... whatever the hell this thing is. It's a pretty good effect to begin with, but I needed to crop the whole thing out and redo it from scratch to get the movement right 2:15 - Behind the mirror There wasn't much I could do here but I wanted to try and somehow obfuscate the original effect without overdoing it, so I just added a little heat distortion 2:25 - Doctor kidnapped 2:32 - The Shadow tortures the Doctor Masking the original effects here was impossible so I just tried to compliment them with something a little more painful looking 2:47 - Marak arrives via transmat 3:05 - The "Planet" of Evil Although the "Third Planet" is referred to as a planet the thing we see is not even slightly planet-like. It's a space station. With caves I didn't consider trying to switch the model "space station" with a black planetoid, but if was doing this for 'real' then I might, since the space station model makes no sense (if anyone has any insights as to why it's a space station, then I'd love to know! Was it a miscommunication to the effects team?) 3:12 - K9 opens the transmat 3:33 - The Marshal's command ship departs Atrios Stabilised the model and added the new Atrios and new a starfield (most of my starfields come from Star Wars, btw, captured from The Empire Strikes Back, because Star Wars starfields are just the best) 3:45 - Shapp zapped 3:50 - Marshal's command ship I assume the set designers had recently seen Star Wars (released in the summer of 1978 in the UK) when they made this, as the cockpit is somewhat reminiscent of the Millennium Falcon's 4:06 - Shapp zapped again There seems little consistency between the colours and sound effects used for these weapons, so I just tried to keep the colours as close to the originals as possible and left the sounds as they were 4:24 - Merak falls 4:34 - Marshal's ship approaches Zeos 4:44 - Mentalis destroyed 4:49 - The Marshal prepares to fire 5:16 - Time loop 5:28 - Hostiles approaching! 5:50 - Another trap for K9 Curiosity of a cat, that K9 6:05 - The Doctor falls into the 'whirlpool' 6:11 - Romana tortured 6:23 - Drax and Theta's Small World This was tricky to do, mainly because of the 'echo' images used in the original effect made it hard to add the shrinking animation (using frame cutouts of the Doctor and Drax). So a lot of masking and swearing went into this 6:36 - K9 blaster testing 6:44 - Merak captures a mute 6:53 - The sixth segment Not sure why the effects team thought they'd use a nice pink for their effect here, but it clashed with the red glow I'd established in the previous segment transformations, so it had to go! 7:12 - K9 bursts in 7:21 - Drax and the Doctor resized Both the Doctor and Drax are moving when they're resized, so using frame cutouts wasn't an option. Instead animated each character's movement in a separate mask using the 'echos' as a guide, then resized the animated glow rather than a static image 7:33 - Blinded by the light It's not entirely clear what happens here, and it's not mentioned in the novelisation, but since an effect was added I had to add one too! 7:40 - "Fire!" Added some rocket exhaust effects 7:46 - The wrong target This was a pretty neat effects shot to begin with, so I stuck to the same general idea but with all new assets 8:22 - Fragmented In the novelisation the Doctor commands the key to scatter itself and return Astra. It's not relevant to the effect, I just thought it was an interesting difference I added the stars to emphasise the segments being re-scattered throughout the cosmos. I'd never noticed before, but you only see five segments drifting apart
