Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indonesian President Prabowo Subiano have unveiled a new bilateral security agreement in Sydney. The agreement follows a report by defense media outlet Janes — which Jakarta denied — that Indonesia was weighing a Russian request to establish a military air base in the eastern part of the country. Australia also recently inked a defense pact with Papua New Guinea and has expanded its military cooperation with Japan. With an economy heavily reliant on exports, Australia can’t afford to lose access to vital maritime trade routes that pass through or near Indonesian waters. For its part, Indonesia has long embraced a foreign policy of multi-alignment. What do Canberra and Jakarta each get out of this new defense deal? And how has the second term of US President Donald Trump altered the political calculus of these countries’ leaders? In this episode, we discuss the Australia-Indonesia pact, their respective foreign policies and the alliance “in all but name” between Japan and Australia. *Recorded on November 17, 2025 at 3pm Taiwan Standard Time Host/Senior Producer: Yin Khvat Producer: Julien Oeuillet Our guests: Alex Tan University of Canterbury, New Zealand, Political Science and International Relations Professor National Chengchi University Political Science Chair Professor Institute for Indo-Pacific Affairs Founder and Principal Research Fellow Patrick Zoll Neue Zürcher Zeitung Indo-Pacific Geopolitics Correspondent Korea Institute for Maritime Strategy Non-Resident Research Fellow Chapters: 00:00:00 - Australia, Indonesia To Sign Security Deal 00:05:02 - Indonesia’s Policy of Non-Alignment 00:16:15 - Canberra Expands Regional Defense Ties 00:20:57 - Japan, Australia Boost Military Cooperation #AustraliaIndonesiaRelations #AustraliaJapanRelations #AustraliaUSRelations #AnthonyAlbanese #PrabowoSubianto #DonaldTrump #TakaichiSanae #XiJinping #IndoPacific #PacificOcean #SouthChinaSea #AustralianForeignPolicy #IndonesianForeignPolicy #Nonalignment #Multialignment #IndonesiaRussiaRelations #SecurityPact #SecurityAgreement #SecurityDeal #CommonSecurity #EnhancedDefenseCooperationAgreement #EDCA #ReciprocalAccessAgreement #RCA #VisitingForcesAgreement #VFA #BRICS #ASEAN #PapuaNewGuinea #PNG #PeoplesRepublicofChina #PRC #PeoplesLiberationArmy #PLA #PLANavy #RussianMilitary #RussianNavy #MaritimeSecurity #InternationalTrade #FreedomofNavigation #UNCLOS #TaiwanPlus #TaiwanTalks
