A relatively recent discover in neuroscience, there is little proof in the scientific literature about how it all works. Dr. Kelley describes his and his colleagues' work trying to better understand this mysterious system. Specifically, Dr. Kelley describes his work understanding the glymphatic system's relationship with the cardiovascular system. His team's results indicate that high blood pressure can cause backflow and inefficient glymphatic flushing of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. These findings have major implications for the role of hypertension in neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease, hydrocephalus, and syringomyelia to name just a few. This presentation was made possible thanks to a generous grant from The Monkton Institute and was presented at the 2019 CSF Hydrodynamics Symposium held in Oslo, Norway.
