Experience how the University of New England utilizes the Sim Lab (part of our Interprofessional Simulation and Innovation Center) to educate Nurse Anesthesia students. UNE students and Center Director Dawne-Marie Dunbar discuss how the course helps prepare students for high-stress, unexpected circumstances that may occur in their hospital and emergency room work. UNE offers the only program in Northern New England that awards a Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) provide direct care to patients before, during, and after the procedure. Our M.S. in Nurse Anesthesia is a 27-month, two-phase program. The UNE Clinical Simulation Lab, or Sim Lab, provides a realistic hospital environment in which health professions students can experience true-to-life scenarios. In complete treatment and ER rooms, students engage with high-fidelity simulation mannequins. From adjoining control rooms, UNE faculty and staff control mannequin vital signs (and even make mannequins talk to the students), to provide patient care experiences in the safety of a simulated environment. UNE programs emphasize the importance of experiential learning for students in the nursing, occupational therapy, physician’s assistant, and other health professions degree programs.
