Infant auricular deformities can be a source of psychological stress for patients and their families, and in some extreme cases lead to hearing loss. Surgical procedures have been used to correct these deformities, however, a more established understanding of the high levels of maternal estrogen present in infants has led to the creation of generic ear-molding systems. These are non-invasive and can remold the infant’s ear within six to eight weeks. This remodeling must occur during the first three months of life for maximum efficacy. Current designs are extremely expensive and are typically not covered by insurance. Through a 3D-printed modeling system, molds can be custom made that are more cost-effective, personable, and quick to fabricate.
