Empowering women economically is a critical intervention to address Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) because economic dependence is a powerful mechanism that traps women in abusive relationships. This vulnerability is driven by deep structural inequalities in South Africa, where women have higher unemployment rates than men. Furthermore, the prevalence of physical and sexual violence decreases as a woman's wealth/income increases, suggesting that financial autonomy is a protective factor. When Capricorn District Municipality first approached their End GBVF 100-Day Challenge, the team took a hard look at the level of women economic inclusion within their own municipal supply chain. They uncovered that only 31% of their supply chain was allocated to women-led businesses. With this insight, they wanted to flip the script and increase this to 69%. By the end of their first 100-Day Challenge cycle, what they achieved was impressive. They managed to exceed their goal by boosting the representation of women-owned businesses in the government supply chain to 75%. Stay tuned for the full documentary on the End GBVF 100-Day Challenges coming out in March 2026.
