In today’s special video, we take you to Surmo Village, where local people are building a temporary wooden bridge over the Shyok River for pedestrian crossing — reviving a centuries-old tradition and a strong sense of community responsibility. For generations, the people of Surmo used to construct this bridge every winter. After the Bailey Bridge was built in 1979, this tradition gradually disappeared. However, due to the devastating floods of 2025, the bridge was destroyed, and in January 2026, the entire community — elders, youth, and children — united once again to rebuild this historic wooden bridge. Today marks the fourth day of construction, and the most difficult phase has been successfully completed, making the bridge usable for daily crossing.
