Jayson Gillham learned Mednter’s first concerto for his part in the new documentary “The Eulogy”, which covers the tragic life of Geoffrey Tozer and was released in October 2019. The recording in this video is the result of that process. Gillham’s playing is energetic and technically superb. However, the production on this record is a bit suboptimal for my liking. First, the piano is mixed relatively loudly and thus often the acoustically prominent part, even when it should only serve as texture (see for example the opening arpeggios). Second, the piano is miked very closely, leading to a bright, but also hard and immediate sound with relatively little reverb. All this makes this lush and majestic concerto sound a bit too confined and intimate for me. On the upside, the resulting sound is very transparent and allows for a close reading of the piano part. All in all, my (and coincidentally also Gillham’s) favorite performance remains the one by Zhukov. Or do you disagre with my impression? Let me know in the comments! A thematic and structural analysis of the concerto to Zhukov’s playing is found here: • Medtner - Piano Concerto 1 Analysis (Zhukov) 00:00 Exposition 08:28 Development: Interludium (08:28), 5 Variations (11:00), Retransition (20:25) 23:24 Recapitulation 25:27 Coda Thanks for watching!
