Lord of the Rings Wooden Sword

I have always liked the shape of this sword from the Lord of the Rings, it appears briefly in the movie but it instantly caught my eye. It is called a High Elven Warrior Sword. I made this from a scrap piece of 1x12 pine board. First I enlarged the image I found on line and then printed it out. I then taped the sheets together and cut out the shape that would become my template. I then traced my template on to the wood and cut the shape out with a jigsaw. I needed to thin down the blade portion so I used my table saw. Its times like these I really wish I had a band saw but sometimes you just have to make due with what you have at your disposal. Next came a ton of sanding to refine the shape. I used my belt sanders and did a bunch of hand sanding to get the finished shape. After the sanding I used some brown spray paint to spray the handle. Once I sprayed it I immediately wiped it off I didn't want the handle to be a solid brown color. Then I used a piece of rope to figure out where the gold leaf decoration would go. Once that was done I used a gold colored paint marker to draw in the gold section. After that I used a technique that I saw Adam Savage use to make a wooden sword look like metal. I used aluminum foil tape to cover the blade. I used some steel wool to add a weathered effect as well as a kind of dry brush technique with spray paint. Basically I sprayed a rag with some black paint and then rubbed that rag all over the blade. Lastly I used some polishing fluff to bring a shine out of the edge so that it would add some contrast. Overall I really like the way this came out, my kids were already calling dibs on it so I know at least that they like it.
