Final Fantasy 3 Is a Strange Game...

  / danidoyle   Final Fantasy 3 is a weird game. In part, it feels like a retreading/refinement of much of what made the first Final Fantasy work, as we abandon the complex narrative of FF2 and once more have 4 nameless heroes saving crystals in a relatively episodic adventure. But from a gameplay perspective, the "Job System" which debuted here feels like a natural evolution of FF2's unique leveling mechanics. On the surface, this should be a recipe for success, but in execution, things feel kinda sloppy, in large part because FF3 bogs its dungeon and boss design down with needless gimmicks, which limit creativity and player expression. There are the ingredients for a great game here, but ultimately, I came away from it quite frustrated.
